Something for Everyone
Evans Bay Yacht And Motor Boat Club has a varied club events programme which ranges from sprint racing for dinghies, through to harbour racing for trailer yachts and keelboats and harbour rallies and cruises for motor boats and launches. The full programme for the season can be found below.
Following the success of the 2023 Mishmosh May Boating series we have scheduled “Special Event Days”. Generally, on the first Saturday of the month, these days will be focussed on doing something different and could include any of the following activities:
Other Activities
Saturday afternoon activities
We all block out Saturday afternoon for our sailing fix, but sometimes the weather just doesn’t play ball for us (especially here in Wellington). And to be honest we miss catching up with everyone on the days that we don’t get to go on the water. So, this season we are introducing Saturday afternoon on shore activities for those days that get “blown out”. This will include things such as Sailing Documentaries or Movies on the big screen (well the 75” anyway), coaching sessions if we find a need for a certain topic, it might even be a board games afternoon (any ideas will be greatly accepted). Basically, just anything to get you down to the Club and away from your chores list at home. And obviously there will always be the Pie shop open at midday!
Sunday Sailing
Last season we removed the option to move Saturday Club Sailing to Sunday. Instead, we that should Saturday Sailing be unable to run, and Sunday is looking nice, we will organise a sailing rally or “adventure sail”. Unfortunately, this never happened for one reason or another, but it is still on the radar, and we are hoping to get some organised this season. These could be a trip around to Oriental Bay, Ward Island, Scorching Bay or Shelley Bay. Or it could be as simple as a few marks being laid in Evans Bay for people to sail around with company. The natural of these activities will be very ad-hoc and advised using WhatsApp.
Classroom Training
The debrief sessions have once again been a huge success over winter and we will carry these through to summer. The plan is to keep them on Tuesday evening at 1830hrs. But this clashes with Twilight Sailing I hear you say. Well, the plan is to have it as the backup option to on the water sailing. Therefore, you can book Tuesday evening out in your diary and know that there will be something happening at the Club.
We are also planning some on water sessions, but these will be very weather dependent so will be advised much closer to the day they are run.
28 September 2024 - Evans Bay
29 September 2024 - Lowry Bay
05 October 2024 - RPNYC
The Keelboat InterClub Series is operated by EBYMBC, LBYC & RPNYC to encourage boats to sail in each other’s Opening Day racing.
The Series is open to Keelboats and Trailer Yachts, is raced over the three opening days and has both a Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker Division.
October 2023 to April 2024
This season we are once again attempting to maintain flexibility in the sailing calendar to ensure that we can include fun activities whenever the weather allows and make the most of the conditions we are dealt.
Every “race” sailed on scheduled Spring Club Sailing Days will count towards Spring Series results, but to steal someone else’s tagline “expect the unexpected” after that. We will be sailing courses that you may not have sailed in an awfully long time, if at all.
Junior & Youth Sailing will also take place in the afternoons of Club Sailing Days. This will see the entire club using the facilities and being out on the water at the same time, once again bringing the junior and senior sides of the club together.
Tuesday Evenings - 1825hrs
October to December 2024
February to March 2025
After the success of the Twilight Sailing recently, this was pretty much the first thing onto the calendar. 1830hrs start and we want everyone to turn up no matter what they sail. We will be running both a “Long Course” and a “Short Course”, so there is something for everyone. We are also excited to welcome back Habit Health Evans Bay on as our Twilight Sponsor.
The Pet Cup is the Club’s oldest trophy, dating back to 1886. It was gifted to the club to be presented on the racing day closest to Wellington Anniversary, so we have taken that literally and organised for it to be raced ON Wellington Anniversary Day. Public Holiday Mondays in Wellington are always beautiful weather (sorry I’ve just wrecked it for this year), and this is another great excuse to get on the water. You never know, it might even be a race back to Evans Bay from a location we have a raft up pre-race…
The Junior Carnival is a new initiative that will include the Wellington O’pen Cup for the NZ O’pen Skiff Class . Other junior classes will be invited for an event focused on fun and getting on the water (with a little bit of racing in there somewhere). We will also use the weekend to showcase the different pathways that junior sailors can take as they progress to playing with the big kids.

The Season Championships will be calculated based on the results from each scheduled Club Sailing Day (Spring & Summer). However, each race day will count as one “race” towards the season championships. This allows for a competitor to miss a day of sailing and not be penalised if multiple races are sailed. It’s all about trying to keep it fair over the season and the realisation that members do have lives and activities outside of sailing.
03 May 2025
The Champion of Champions event sees the best of the best from the EBYMBC Season Championships battle it out to find the ultimate "Champion".
The action is set up right off the Club wharf allowing for great spectator viewing, so get on down and support your divisional champion to be their best!
The Te Ākautangi Matariki Water Sports Festival is a growing event, which we are aiming to make it bigger and better for 2024.
Paddle sports will be out there again competing while the Matariki Classic is happening and hopefully we might even be able to encourage some windsurfers or wing foilers to also participate. Get it in your diary because it is one that you really do not want to miss! 20-22 June 2025.
